ABOUT THE ROLLERBLACKS
Wheelchair Basketball is one of the original Paralympic sports, first emerging around 1946 in the USA. Developed by injured service members returning from World War II, who wanted to continue playing basketball, post injury.
For more than 40 years, Wheelchair Basketball has established its presence within New Zealand adaptive sports. Enabling Kiwi para-athletes to pursue their passion for this great game while achieving their dreams.
Throughout our history, The New Zealand Roller Blacks have competed internationally with other top nations from around the world. New Zealand has previously been competitive with powerhouse teams such as Australia. However, continual absence from international tournaments due to lack of funding has hindered our progression. For more than 2 decades, New Zealand Wheelchair Basketball and the Roller Blacks have fallen rapidly behind other nations who have continued to develop their game, regularly competing on the world stage.
With a new coaching and management team, the Roller Blacks’ goal is to focus on the growth and development of the team, re-establishing ourselves internationally as a formidable and respected opponent.
